Introduction

The Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Exam 2024 is a competitive examination held annually by the Himachal Pradesh High Court for the recruitment of Civil Judges in the Junior Division. This exam is structured into three phases: the Preliminary Examination (Objective Type), the Written Main Examination (Subjective Type), and a Personality Test.

 

 Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Exam, candidates must meet the following requirements:

1. Educational Qualification: Candidates must possess a Bachelor of Law degree recognized by the Bar Council of India

2. Age Limit: Applicants should be at least 22 years old but not more than 30 years old as of the last date for application submission. The upper age limit is relaxed by 3 years for SC/ST and OBC candidates from Himachal Pradesh.

 Preliminary Examination Syllabus

The preliminary examination consists of three objective-type papers, each carrying 100 marks and lasting one hour. All three papers will be conducted on the same day. The subjects for the preliminary exam are:

- Civil Law-I:

  - Code of Civil Procedure, 1908

  - Indian Evidence Act, 1872

  - Indian Stamp Act, 1899

  - Himachal Pradesh Courts Act, 1976

  - Specific Relief Act, 1963

- Civil Law-II:

  - Indian Contract Act, 1872

  - Hindu Law

  - Indian Limitation Act, 1963

  - Transfer of Property Act, 1882

  - H.P. Urban Rent Control Act, 1987

- Criminal Law:

  - Indian Penal Code, 1860

  - Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973

  - Chapter XVII (Sections 138 to 143) of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881

  - H.P. Excise Act, 2011

  - Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and the Indian Forest Act, 1927

 Mains Examination Syllabus

The Mains examination comprises five descriptive papers:

- Paper 1: Civil Law - I (200 Marks)

- Paper 2: Civil Law - II (200 Marks)

- Paper 3: Criminal Law (200 Marks)

- Paper 4: English Composition (150 Marks)

- Paper 5: Language (Hindi) (100 Marks)

  - Translation of an English passage into Hindi

  - Essay in Hindi on one of three given topics

  - Composition, including idioms and corrections

 

 Interview

The final stage of the selection process is the Interview (viva-voce), which carries 100 marks. Candidates must first pass the Mains examination to be eligible for this personality test. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated and scored out of a possible 150 marks.

 

To be considered for selection, the scores from the personality test will be combined with the Mains examination scores. Candidates must achieve at least 45% of the total marks in the interview to receive a letter of appointment.
