Reservation System in India

The centuries old caste systemobtains the first place as the most significant, austere, diffusive andviolent discrimination in India. The Constitution of India revoked the caste systemof the old age in 1952. A new provision was introduced topunish for the offence of untouchability. Initially, the reason of appearing the very term ‘reservation' in Indian Constitution was for giving equal opportunity to every human being.

The process of Reservation in India is revoking a definitenumber of positions in government institutions for members of lower class and the needy.Dr.Ambedkar found the origin of the system soon after Independence. The purpose of the reservation is to provide opportunities to the lower class people popularly know as Scheduled Castes (SCs – the lower castes in the caste-hierarchy of the Hindu culture), Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). In 1992, the Supreme Court of India declared that the limit of reservations could not more than 50 percent.

In reality, the Reservation policy cannot achieve its purpose of giving equal opportunity to everyone. The people of rural area are suffering from lack of infrastructure and facilities. The people are not aware of the policy who are living in the interior parts of the nation. They don’t even get the opportunity of primary education and basic employment which make them more backward financially. Though there are constitutional prohibitions and laws on untouchability, untouchables have tolead their lives in panic and fear. They have to suffer from injustices in rural areas.

Notably there is no abolishment of caste system. Mostly undeserving people get the opportunities and advantages and the deserving people get any chance to change their plight. The members of lower class suffer from the though that they do not have sufficient reservation and the members of upper class suffer from thethought that inspite of their hard work and merits they do not have the same opportunities. Though deserving students are able to obtain better marks, they cannot achieve better places for the lack of general seats. Deserving students fail to get admission in the best college. Whereas a reserved student can achieve better place without obtaining better marks. With less qualificationan reservedemployee can get promotion easily whereas an eligible employee of general category fails to get promotion. However the whole purpose of providing equal opportunity fails to achieve it’s actual goal.

In conclusion Reservation is definitely in needfor the people with lower income, not only to provide advantages to the reserved candidates. However, the policy of reservation should be maintained in a scientific and rational way to get better result. There is nothing wrong to give the opportunities and advantages only to the first generation beneficiaries of reservation, that is to say, those candidates should not get facilities whose parents have already got reservation facilities in securing a job. The concept of creamy layer to SCs and STs should be applied. Change will lead the progress. With a massive change, our government should improve the system of the reservation ensuring the development of Indian society.
