The law course is a very comprehensive course wherein various subjects are studied by the students throughout 5 year or 3 year of respective law course journey. The purpose of law course is to give overview of the prospective fields in which a student could pursue their career. There are various fields after the law course like judiciary, corporate, practice, legal advisor etc. however, these are the broad heads, there is a sub-division as in which law a student can work as abovementioned. This leads to a lot of confusion in determining field of interest and eventually choosing the career in the same. The following points can resolve this confusion.
1) INTROSPECTION:
The first and foremost requirement before choosing career in any field is the introspection i.e. the person should be aware of his/her skills for instance: some are good in oratory skills, some in research skills etc. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of the skills and weaknesses of oneself.
2) READ BOOKS:
The second most important thing which a law student should do is to read a lot. In the law course journey a student must read all the subjects thoroughly i.e. bare act and the reference books. This approach develops the in-depth understanding of the law which eventually enables a student to understand whether he/she is interested in subject or not.
3) TALK TO PEOPLE IN THE PROFESSION:
After choosing the potential subject of interest the student should talk to the people of respective industry so as to understand the work related to that field. Talking to people also helps in understanding the overall life of a person working in that field which gives the insight into the future if career is pursued in that subject.
4) INTERNSHIPS:
The Bar Council of India has mandated internships during the law course with the sole reason of giving a practical insight of law to the students. The student should utilise these internships utmost by interning in different areas so to understand the area of their interest. The student can utilize the internships by learning the work that is required in the field and understand the practicality of the subject of interest. Furthermore, students should also have a futuristic approach while interning i.e. to decide upon the factor whether he/she will be able to sustain with such work.
5) RESEARCH ABOUT SUBJECT OF INTEREST AND THE WORK-LIFE:
The next most important thing in any field is to gain a deep knowledge about the work-life in the particular field they are interested. The best way to evade from this confusion is to research in the subject of interest so to be aware about the nuances of such field and
also research about the practical approach and required skill set. The research gives the student insight into the overall career in respective subject.
6) INCENTIVE PROVIDED BY THE JOB:
The career is made out of subject of interest with the sole purpose of monetary benefits. The incentive provided by the job always plays an important role in the growth of your personal life. Therefore, while choosing a career out of subject of interest, the student must analyse the monetary benefits provided by the job. The incentive provided by the job should be satisfactory to the amount of hard-work put in by the person.
7) DOES THE WORK GIVE YOU SATISFACTION:
The subject of interest should not be chosen just on the basis of incentive but self-satisfaction is also an integral part of working. The student should also ensure that he/she are satisfied with the kind of work he/she is given and it does not become monotonous in near future. Financial, physical and mental satisfactions are the three main things that should be kept in mind while choosing the field of interest or even while working in the same.
The above mentioned points are some of the main factors that must be taken care of before choosing a career in the field of law. If a student chooses to make a career in law, he/she must prepare themselves for the physical and mental hardships that they will come across while pursuing their career in this field. Secondly, the student must ensure whether he/she will be interested in learning not just the subject of interest but also the nuances of corollary law subjects. The overall aspect i.e. satisfaction along with the monetary benefits must be looked into while choosing a career.
